Bennu's grains look like fine dust glued near the old snow line

Space reported on 27 September 2026 that a team at ETH Zurich, given about half a gram of the 120-gram sample NASA's OSIRIS-REx returned from Bennu in September 2023, found iron and titanium isotopes evenly mixed, close to the asteroid Ryugu and to rare CI chondrite meteorites. In a Science Advances paper published on 23 September 2026, they read that mix as fine dust gathered near the snow line, roughly where Jupiter orbits now, with ice helping bind the grains, rather than a later birth far out among comets. In their account Jupiter, formed within about a million years of the Sun, blocked coarser clumps while finer dust flowed past, and water-bearing minerals suggest vapor from just inside the snow line was carried in too. That snow-line history is their reconstruction from the isotopes and the minerals, not a moment anyone observed.

What if a solar dust ratio could license a dry rock as wet?

Part one

The Dry Stamp

The crusher on Dock Nine took one grain at a time. Mara fed it with tweezers and held her breath until the tray answered.

This grain had come back solar. Iron and titanium ran even through it, the flat mix the license called primordial: fine dust that had slipped a young giant and stuck where ice could still glue a stone. Hybrid, neither inner nor outer. Close enough to the old snow line that the buyer would spend the fuel.

The buyer had paid for water-bearing rock. Mara's bonus was her sister's berth, and the fee was due before the window shut.

The press came down. The grain powdered. She tipped the tray toward the lamp. Pale. Dry. Nothing in it that had once been ice.

The water field on the screen blinked empty. The ratios kept glowing, patient, as if evenness were a kind of wet. Stamp the license and a dry rock would ship under a wet name. Void the lot and the berth fee died with it.

Mara set her thumb on the stamp. Behind her, the door bolt shot home.

What’s real

  • Iron and titanium isotopes in Bennu were well mixed.
  • The team ties that mix to fine dust near the snow line.
  • Water-bearing minerals suggest ice helped bind the grains.
  • That snow line sat roughly where Jupiter orbits now.

What’s invented

  • Mara, her sister, and Dock Nine.
  • A license that stamps an isotope average as water-bearing.
  • This later grain matching the solar mix and crushing dry.
  • The door bolt that locks when she stamps.

Part two: The Bolt Behind Her

Mara has to get the bolt open before a dry grain leaves under the wet license her sister's berth depends on.

How it works

Each record starts with one real science event, with a link to where it was reported.

A short story then asks what happens next. Part one is free to read.

Part two costs a few dollars, paid once. You keep it.
