A device fuses microwave photons into larger graphs
A Nature Physics paper published on 30 September 2026 demonstrates a deterministic fusion operation for microwave photons on a superconducting circuit, with a form of error mitigation built in. The team generates small time-bin cluster states on demand and joins them by projecting pairs of flying photons into Bell states, resetting and reusing superconducting qubits so decoherence does not end the sequence. They report genuine multipartite entanglement across 13 photonic qubits and say the graphs can be reconfigured. The result is a laboratory method for building photonic graph states, not a networked quantum repeater in the field.
The record ends here. Everything below this line is invented.
What if a quantum message could be welded photon by photon?
Part one
The Thirteenth Photon
Willa kept the graph the way other people kept a switchboard. Photons came in time bins, small clusters made on demand, and her job was to fuse them, pair by pair, into the shape the afternoon's protocol had drawn. The fusion was supposed to be certain, not a coin toss, which was why the building had bet a link on it.
Twelve photons sat in the shape she wanted. The thirteenth was in the pipe, a flying microwave packet aimed at a partner that would weld it to the edge.
The weld happened. The entanglement witness across all thirteen cleared the line the protocol called genuine. Then she looked at the neighbors. The new photon had stuck to the wrong vertex. The graph was entangled and it was not the graph on the drawing.
The link was scheduled to send on that shape at the hour.
Willa held the release. The thirteenth photon was already part of the state, and the state would not wait in memory.
What’s real
- Fusion of microwave photonic graph states was deterministic in this device
- Qubits were reset and reused to limit decoherence
- The team showed genuine multipartite entanglement across 13 photonic qubits
- The work is a lab demonstration, not a field repeater
What’s invented
- Willa's scheduled link and the drawing on her desk
- A thirteenth photon welded to the wrong vertex
- A state that cannot be stored until the hour
- A release she is holding
